Blurb reads:
"Being a private detective is a strange sort of business. A business which sometimes attracts odd types. it has always seemed to me that the primary attraction to the profession is a desire for adventure, for an irregular, sometimes boring boring, and occasionally exciting life." So writes Caryl O'Hara, introducing Peter Cheyney's 27th novel and himself as a new addition to Cheyney's list of well-loved detective characters.
"This is the story," he continues, "of Leonora Ivory, of Alexis and Esmerelda Ricaud, of John Eipton Pell and a few other people who came into it, said their little piece and walked - or were pushed - out again. It is also a part of my life because I handled the Ivory business. Cheyney has written it pretty well as I told it to him. He has found it necessary to alter names..."
And so we accompany Caryl O'Hara up to his office on the evening of a day on which he had been giving evidence in a peculiarly unsavoury divorce case, a case in which Counsel had been a little unpleasant. But Caryl's evidence had clinched the case. And he was due to draw £1000. He fancied he'd take a bit of a holiday - until he opened his office door, found the light on, and seated in the armchair in front of his desk... "This, I thought, is the end of a perfect day." Maybe it was, but it was also the beginning of a perfect case, probably the most perfect case that Mr Cheyney, with as good an eye for a pretty plot as for a pretty woman, has ever devised.
